Chapter 19
Griffin pulled up to the curb about ten houses down from the Blingstersâ party pad, figuring that if Rolly was around, heâd probably have parked closer than that. There was no sign of his car anywhere, though, including down the street in the other direction, past the house. Good.
The house looked empty as she approached it, or quiet at least. G-maâs Benz was in the carport, but no other cars were around and the porch light was off. Griffin crept up the stairs and, using some skills she did happen to remember from her training, let herself into the house.
No one was home, and she reasoned it was probably okay if she looked around a little, since she happened to be in the neighborhood. She turned on a lamp sitting on a side table, casting a dim light through the living room and a few yards down the hallway. Visibility was good enough to do a little snooping, so she waded through the living room carpet, unable to miss the fact that the place was even dirtier than it had been before. And she had just been there a few hours earlier. It already seemed like a lifetime ago.
Now as she stood there, she was apprehensive of what she might find and unsure of where she should start looking. She also wasnât sure what she wanted to find in the first place. But what she discovered made her stomach drop.
Strewn on the dinette table in front of the sliding glass door was a collection of interesting items. There was a box of bullets, only half full. Next to that lay some kind of hunting knife and a few black velvet pouches, the kind you might see in those old movies about big jewelry heists. The thieves would pull one of those pouches out of their coat pocket and pour a brilliant cache of diamonds into someoneâs palm. Griffin checked each bag. Empty.
What did the items mean? The tableau could represent any number of things. The hunting knife might be for cutting up a rotisserie chicken for dinner, the pouches were for storing expensive hearing aids, and the bullets might be headed for the Goodwill giveaway box.
A second possible scenario was that the Blingsters had, at the last minute, changed their minds about participating in some kind of criminal activity and left everything behind to drive to the casino, like every other self-respecting Florida senior.
Or these were their leftover supplies for a âjobâ of some sort. But if the deadly-looking hunting knife was an extra item, she would hate to see what knife had made the cut. So to speak.
Her heart couldnât decide if it wanted to leap into her throat or drop into her stomach. Either way, Griffin had a bad feeling about what might be happening elsewhere in Florida at that moment.
She was about to look around the apartment more, but her phone buzzed in her back pocket. When she pulled it out, there was Grandma Lougheedâs picture on the screen.
